DEFINITION OF SIZE

ART EXHIBITION

THE ART PROJECT

We are holding a major Plus Size Art Project. This will be the first of its kind in the Uk in combating body discrimination and creating a body confidence community.  We hope to help society to change its attitude and realize that we are now at a global epidemic of weight issues and body management.  We have to change the current methods and I believe it starts right here by re-educating people’s perceptions and the images they see around size and shape.

WHAT THE ART PROJECT IS ABOUT
Most images you see around plus size are let’s face it, negative. Even when positive pictures are taken they look old fashioned and dowdy. I want to create fashionable images of model/people wearing the latest fashions without looking mumzie. Talking about people's health rather than weight is the key; fitness NOT size. We will be working with Artist and Photographers to create beautiful plus size body images from all walks of life. This will encompass, plus size people/models, the building industry and business people to bring together a community that is often isolated simply because of their appearance. To help change the attitudes of society and misconceptions that people are fat and lazy and affect the economy. I would like to show how beautiful people can look behind the camera regardless of size.  Many of these people have not left their homes, or taken a picture of themselves in years. This will allow them to share their experiences on being plus size, the effects that society puts on being perfect, how if at all they have overcome the body issues and what this exhibition has done for them. But also to showcase up and coming artists, photographers and channelling something positive into the media instead of the previously mentioned negativity towards body size
I particularly want to target schools/colleges as I believe this is where the major changes have to come from. If we viewed people differently from a young age and the pressure wasn’t on children to be perfect. Then I don’t think there we would be at an epidemic stage of eating disorders.

WHAT IS THE NEED FOR THIS
For decades people have struggled with their body issues, looking for perfection. This only worsened in the sixties when the size zero dominated our fashion, TV, media and magazines industries. Creating a society of low self-esteem, depression and body morphia with many people yo-yo dieting from one diet to the next affecting our bodies and causing not just weight issues but or body insulin often causing diabetes and much more. We all know weight can affect people’s health and therefore we should be working on fitness and not size also how we use food. Instead of diets, pharmaceutical product, being inundated with obesity programs, body weight being disgusting and something that society should ridicule. Although things are changing it is still very much advertised that the size zero is what people should work towards. I recently read that the fashion industry is looking at using a size eight as plus size. Which really concerns me with children as young as five on diets and campaigns against obese children. My fear is unless we start changing the language around food, body shapes and sizes we will lose total control.

WHAT WE HOPE TO CHANGE
My hope is to break down the attitudes and to put a stop to the discrimination. To build up people's body confidence of all shapes and sizes as there is no such thing as true perfection, we are all so different. The same methods that are used to isolate certain body images are the same procedure we need to change and show plus size in a more positive light.  This will then allow people to take more control over their own lives rather than trying to live up to unrealistic expectations of others.
